Empire Magazine's Top 500 Movies of All Time

So …just what we needed as Christmas nears…..Another list! UK film magazine Empire has just released its list of the "
Top 500 Movies of All Time". So how does this list rank with some of the other top whatever movies of all time lists? Well it certainly won’t get any accolades from the pure cinema purists and film academics of the world.
At best, this list has been complied with the "Next Generation" in mind. One might call it 21st Century "Best" movie revisionism. Only one, "
The Godfather" (# 1) of what one might argue are the landmark films of all time are in the Top Ten. In fact only one movie in the Top Ten was made before 1972. What? If the movie was made in black and white it doesn’t count?
To see "
The Empire Strikes Back" (1980) as the third best movie of all time suggests that the audience that Empire Magazine (namesake intended?) is appealing those more at home at Comic-Con then the Sundance Film Festival. Not too many of Empire Magazine’s subscribers own many movies on DVD from the Criterion Collection.
"
Raiders of the Lost Ark" was a great movie, but the second best movie of all time? Better than "Citizen Kane"? Better than "Casablanca"? Pauline Kael will be turning in her grave. Here are the results from Empire Magazine and the American Film Institute’s Top 100. You be the judge.
